A beautiful denarius of Q. Lutatius Cerco with exceptional reverse details
Lot 1417
Q. Lutatius Cerco, 109-108 BC. Denarius (Silver, 18 mm, 4.00 g, 8 h), Rome. ROMA / CERCO Head of Roma to right, wearing crested helmet decorated with plume and two stars; behind, star (mark of value). Rev. Q•LVTATI / Q Galley to right within oak wreath; helmeted head of Roma on prow; another head further back. Babelon (Lutatia) 2. Crawford 305/1. RBW 1146. Sydenham 559. Struck in high relief and of fine style. A few small scratches, otherwise, extremely fine.

The two heads on the galley on the reverse represent an interesting and rarely described detail of this coin type, which is seldom found in such fine condition as this example. The head on the prow likely represents Roma, while the one at the stern is probably Apollo or Sol, as a radiant crown is visible.
